Government Workplace Harassment Lawyer

Our well-known Washington, D.C., employment law firm of Josh F. Bowers, P.C. welcomes the opportunity to represent your rights if you are a federal employee who has found himself or herself in the midst of a hostile work environment.

The harassment in question could be of a sexual or nonsexual nature but is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Harassment is legally defined in our system as unwelcome conduct based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability or age. It becomes unlawful in situations where the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile or abusive.

Harassment is also prohibited against individuals in retaliation for filing a discrimination charge; testifying or participating in any way in an investigation, proceeding or lawsuit; or opposing employment practices that discriminate against others.

Contact our law offices immediately with the details of the hostile work environment you're suffering at your federal job. You don't have to tolerate it any longer. We can help. Schedule an initial consultation by phone or e-mail.

Dedicated to Protecting the Rights of Federal Employees

Harassment as it relates to a hostile work environment at the federal level can occur in the following major areas of employment:

Compared with these primary methods of promoting a hostile work environment, an assortment of job harassments such as petty slights, annoyances and isolated incidents may not rise to the definition of a "hostile" workplace. To be unlawful in that extreme, the conduct being complained about must create a work environment that is intimidating, hostile or offensive to reasonable people.

Offensive conduct on the part of a supervisor, employer's agent, co-worker or nonemployee may include one or more of the following:

  • Offensive jokes or slurs
  • Epithets or name calling
  • Physical assaults or threats
  • Intimidation
  • Ridicule or mockery
  • Insults or put-downs
  • Offensive objects or pictures
  • Interference with work performance

Your federal employer, supervisor or superior should take all appropriate measures to correct workplace harassment and create an environment in which employees feel free to raise concerns and are confident that those concerns will be addressed. These moves could resemble some combination of a grievance process and effective anti-harassment training.

Please be in touch with our law offices of Josh F. Bowers, P.C. if your rights as a federal employee need to be protected in a hostile work environment situation.
